Telegram Surpasses 1 Billion Users and Becomes Profitable
Telegram surpasses 1 billion users and has officially become the second most popular messaging app in the world, behind only WhatsApp. According to Pavel Durov, the platform’s monthly active users have now significantly exceeded 1 billion, confirming its steady global growth.
Rapid Growth and User Engagement
In addition to the increasing number of users, engagement is also rising. On average, each user opens Telegram 21 times a day and spends 41 minutes on the app. This highlights the platform’s strong audience involvement, making it one of the most widely used digital platforms for communication, work, and business.
The company’s financial results are equally impressive. In 2024, Telegram became profitable for the first time, generating $547 million. This marks a major milestone for the messenger, which has remained independent for years and was funded through its own resources without relying on external investors.
Competition and Future Prospects
Durov also addressed the competition with WhatsApp, calling it a “cheap, watered-down imitation of Telegram.” He stated that WhatsApp had spent years trying to copy Telegram’s innovations while simultaneously burning billions on lobbying and PR efforts to slow down its growth. However, these attempts failed—Telegram continued to expand, became profitable, and retained its independence, strengthening its position in the global market.
According to Durov, this success is just the beginning. He hinted that Telegram users can expect new achievements, large-scale updates, and improvements that will make the messenger even more convenient, secure, and feature-rich.
